5 Things Every OCR Needs to Know

If you’re thinking about doing an obstacle course race, or have done one, you know you need these 5 essentials:

 1. Build up your strength endurance.

Whether you’re doing a 5k or a 10k obstacle course race, you need to do more than just run. Incorporate sprinting, push ups, tuck jumps, and jumping lunges into your runs.

2. Increase your grip strength.

In any obstacle course you do, your bound to have to hold on to some type of pull-up bar (this is where most people struggle). To make sure you don’t fall in the water, find a local playground and practice hanging on the monkey bars for 10 seconds at a time. Once you’ve mastered that, work up to 30 sec. Try to make it to 1 minute before your race. It’s also a great idea to join a rock climbing gym.

3. Get the Right Equipment

Outfit:

If you're going to get muddy, cold, hot, wet, electrocuted, and sweaty, you might as well do it in style.

Post-race Protection:

While your training for an OCR, and after the race, the seats of your car will get trashed from all the sweat/dirt. Try using a Seat Hoody to protect your seats! It easily comes on and off your car seat, and is machine washable. Perfect for every OCR.

4. Eat Right.

You’ve heard this one before, but it’s so important we had to include it. Make sure you’re eating whole foods – vegetables, fruit, lean proteins like chicken and fish, and whole grains like rice, quinoa, and hearty breads while you’re training. It will make racing so much more enjoyable if you’re fueling your body with good fuel and feeling great!

5. Team.

To have the best experience, do your OCR with a team! No matter how much you train, you’ll have 10x more fun if you can share your race with a group of people who will always remember the muddy glory of finishing together!
